From leaf to pouch

How our henna is made

Every pack goes through the same five steps between the fields of Sojat and our packing room in Jhansi.

  1. Sojat

    Harvest

Henna leaves are harvested and dried in Sojat.

  2. Sojat

    Grind & filter

The dried leaf is ground and passed through 13 stages of filtering for a fine, even powder.

  3. Sojat → Jhansi

    Ship

The powder travels to Jhansi in large packs.

  4. Jhansi

    Cloth-filter

Our team cloth-filters it again by hand to take out anything coarse.

  5. Jhansi

    Pack

Weighed into pouches or mixed into cone paste, with the batch and dates printed on every pack.

How to use

Colouring your hair with henna

Henna rewards a little patience. Plan for an afternoon for the powder, or an hour or two for a cone touch-up.

Henna Powder · full head

Mix, rest, apply

  1. MixPut the powder in a glass, ceramic or plastic bowl. Add warm water a little at a time and stir to a thick, smooth paste, like yogurt.
  2. RestCover the bowl and leave it at room temperature for 4 to 12 hours so the dye releases. It needs less time in warm weather.
  3. ApplyWear gloves. Section clean hair and work the paste in from roots to ends, then cover with a shower cap.
  4. WaitLeave it on for 2 to 4 hours. A longer wait gives a deeper result.
  5. RinseRinse with plain water until it runs clear. Wait 24 to 48 hours before you shampoo.

The leaflet in your pouch has the full instructions. Follow it where anything differs from this page.

Henna Hair Cones · touch-ups

Snip, apply, rinse

  1. SnipCut a small opening at the tip of the cone. A smaller opening gives a finer line.
  2. ApplyWear gloves. On clean, dry hair, squeeze the paste along your parting, roots or grey strands.
  3. WaitLeave it on for 2 to 3 hours.
  4. RinseRinse with plain water and skip shampoo for a day.
  5. StoreKeep opened cones in the fridge. Check the best-before date on the box.

The cones contain no preservatives, so keeping them cold matters.

Shade guide

What colour to expect

Henna adds red to the colour you start with. It cannot lighten hair, so the lighter your hair, the brighter the result.

Grey or white

Greys take henna well

Before
Day 3

Bright copper on rinse day, settling to a deeper copper-red. A second application a few days later deepens it further.

Blonde or light brown

Most visible change

Before
Day 3

Copper to light auburn, with a warm glow in daylight.

Medium brown

Warmth and shine

Before
Day 3

Rich auburn with red glints, and noticeably more shine.

Dark brown or black

Subtle tint

Before
Day 3

A red-brown sheen that shows most in sunlight. Great for gloss and conditioning.

Swatches are a guide. Your result depends on your hair's starting colour, its condition and how long you leave the henna on.

Questions

Good to know before you order

Anything else? Email feedback@theorganichenna.shop or message us on Instagram.

Is your henna 100% pure?

Yes. The powder contains only henna leaf (Lawsonia inermis), with nothing added. The cones are henna powder, distilled water and clove, eucalyptus and tea tree oils, with no preservatives.

Is it certified organic?

Not yet. The Organic Henna is our brand name. We are working towards organic certification and will update our packs and this page once it is in place.

Will it cover grey hair?

Yes. Grey and white hair take henna well. Expect bright copper on rinse day that deepens over about three days. A second application a few days later gives deeper coverage.

Can henna make my hair brown or black?

Not on its own. Henna gives red, copper and auburn tones. Brown and black results usually come from applying indigo after henna.

Can I use it over coloured or treated hair?

Pure henna is generally fine over previous colour, but results vary. Try it on a small strand first, especially if your hair is bleached, permed or relaxed.

Why do the cones need to go in the fridge?

They contain no preservatives. Once the box is open, keeping the cones cold keeps the paste fresh. Each box carries a best-before date six months from manufacture.

How long does the powder keep?

24 months from the manufacture date on the pack. Seal the pouch after each use and store it somewhere cool and dry.
